Single Origin coffee is proving to be the next IT of the coffee world, but what exactly is it?


What Does Single Origin Mean?

Single Origin is a little title that packs a big punch. The term “Single Origin Coffee” refers to coffee that is sourced from one singular crop, region, or producer in one country. As the most important factor of Single Origin is traceability, you can narrow down the origin of your coffee even further, using the terms: Single Farm

  • This means that the coffee is sourced from one farm, mill, or co-op.

Single Estate

  • Some coffee labels will go as far as to list the Estate name and the specific lot that the coffee was grown on. Talk about specificity!

What Are the Benefits of Single Origin Coffee?

i. Single Origin coffee typically offers a distinct taste that is unique to its origin. Flavors of coffee beans can be influenced by numerous factors, including soil, altitude, climate, sunlight and local fauna.

2. It's Seasonal and Specialty

i. Single Origin coffee is typically only able to be harvested for a small portion of the year, creating the need for blended coffee mixtures on off season. Crops of single origin coffee beans tend to be smaller and more concentrated, which creates a higher demand for the beans when they are in season.

3. It’s Better Quality

i. Single Origin coffee is typically better quality. Coffee with a traceable origin is sought after as it is able to show how versatile the flavors in coffee can be.


If a Coffee Product is Not Single Origin… What is it? It’s a Blend!

Coffee that isn’t single origin is typically referred to as a blend, which takes two or more different origin coffee beans and mixes them together. The basic idea behind a blend is to take the best qualities from different origins to create a smooth and well-balanced coffee product. Blends are likely to be the main menu for most coffee shops due to their increased consistency and availability, worldwide.


The biggest challenge with blends is to try to create a coffee that maintains an all year round consistency without losing all of the flavors of its origin. The usual lack of specificity creates a strong market for single origin coffee, with popularity growing by the second.

Single Origin Coffee is particularly popular because of its traceability. With the rise of environmental and fair trade awareness, educated consumers are looking to companies that not only talk the talk, but walk the walk.

Single Origin Coffee is More Expensive. Is it Worth the Money?

In short, absolutely. While single origin coffee is usually sold at a higher price, baristas and coffee producers do not usually take the time to explain the qualities that make single origin such a delicacy.
